Mountain and Cathars

Description

The departure of our trek takes place in our riding farm in the area of Mirepoix, a beautiful middle age village where life is pleasant.
We shall travel on the same paths the last Cathars went through, the “fellows” , to escape from the French inquisition in the thirteen century. To avoid the inquisition guards their guides were often the Ariegeois shepherds, who knew so well the mountains paths.

Planning

Saturday

Reception of the riders in Mirepoix. Night in hôtel or gîte.

Sunday

Mirepoix (gîte or hôtel)– Montbel (bivouac)
Riding journey accross the middle age villages of Lagarde and Camon to join the lake of Montbel where we shall have our bivouac.

Monday

Montbel – Puivert (Gîte)
We shall appreciate the freshness across the boxwoods before we arrive in Puivert valley where we shall breathe the Mediterranean fragrance.

Tuesday

Puivert – Belvis (Gîte or Bivouac)
We shall visit Puivert castle before ride to Nebias then we start the ascent to Sault Plateau towards the mountains.

Wednesday

Belvis – Chioula (Refuge with keeper )
From Belvis we will ride to the village of Montaillou, one of the last Cathars shelter and then we pass through the Col of Balagues towards the Refuge of Chioula.

Thursday

Chioula – Montségur (gîte)We will ride high in the mountains on the summer pastures « sept cazes », we will pass the Fourcat Mount and the Col of La Peyre before we come down to Montsegur, the famous theatre of the Perfects Stake.

Friday

Montségur – Comus (gîte)
New ascent through the Frau gorges, passing the Pas de l’Ours towards the Plateau d’Aillou.

Saturday

Departure from Comus

The stages are strictly inverted for the September trek.
